THE EFFECT OF CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA ON HEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS
1Fatih Sultan Mehmet Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Kulak Burun Boğaz, İstanbul, Türkiye Aim: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the pathological conditions in the middle ear and hematological parameters of patients who underwent surgery for chronic otitis media.Material and Methods: In the study, 82 patients and 20 healthy control groups who underwent chronic otitis surgery between January 2017 and December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to their intraoperative findings: Chronic otitis media (COM) with cholesteatoma, active COM and inactive COM. Three groups and control groups were compared in terms of hematological parameters.
Results: It was observed that 23 of the patients had COM with cholesteatoma, 34 had active COM, and 25 had inactive COM. Red cell distribution with (RDW) and platelet crit (PCT) values were statistically significantly different in COM patients compared to the control group. (p <0.05). Mean platelet volume (MPV) was statistically significantly lower in the inactive COM group compared to the other groups (p <0.05).
Conclusion: Chronic otitis media causes an increase in RDW values and a decrease in PCT values. However, these effects do not show specific differences for COM with cholesteatoma, active COM, and inactive COM groups.
