EVALUATION OF MAXILLARY ASYMMETRY IN PATIENTS WITH DEVIATED NOSE DEFORMITY
1İstinye Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KBB, İstanbul, Türkiye Introduction: Rhinoplasty has become one of the most common forms of facial cosmetic surgery. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is asymmetry between the right and left maxillary bones of the patients with axial curvature of the nose and to determine the relationship between asymmetry and the curvature of the nose.Material and Methods: Between January 2015 and June 2018, the files of the patients who had undergone rhinoplasty operation in our clinic were retrospectively screened. A total of 212 patients were included in the study. Deviated nose evaluations were performed on baseline facial images of maxillary bone asymmetry evaluations through frontal face photographs taken. Basal maxillary asymmetry was determined by determining the level difference between the lines drawn parallel to the ground from the points where the right and left nasal areas were connected to the face on the basal photographs. Patients were grouped as those with and without maxillary asymmetry. The hypoplasic side in the group with maxillary asymmetry was determined as right and left.
Results: A total of 212 patient photographs were analyzed. The number of patients with maxillary asymmetry at baseline was 83 (39.1%). The maxillary asymmetry ratio was found to be statistically significant (p = .04). 40 patients (63.4%) showed curvature and maxillary hypoplasia on the same side.
Conclusion: In the group of patients with deviation of the nasal pyramid, we found a higher rate of maxillary asymmetry between the deviation side and the hypoplasic side of the maxilla compared to the group without deviation (63,4%). Our results show that baseline maxillary evaluation is important in order to achieve patient expectations and explain possible outcomes to patients.
