1Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KBB ABD, Sivas, Türkiye2Kızılay Tıp Merkezi, KBB , Sivas, Türkiye Purpose: To determine the impact of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on the quality life of the patients whom has been performed FESS for chronic rhinosinusitis.
Method: The quality of life of the patients was determined with the inquiry of Chronic Sinusitis Survey (CSS) answered by the patients. The answers were studied in 3 groups as symptom score of CSS, medication score of CSS and total score of CSS. The distributions of the scores were between 0 to100, and 0 was representing the worst and 100 the best score. Patients are also grouped as ones with general rhinosinusitis, ones with nasal polyp, and ones without nasal polyp. Preoperative CSS scores and scores of 1 year after FESS were statistically analyzed in all groups. The differences of CSS score before FESS and 1 year after FESS between the ones with nasal polyp and the ones without nasal polyp were also statistically analyzed.
Results: All 3 scores were increased for all groups 1 year after the FESS and there were statistically significant differences between preoperative scores and the scores of 1 year after the operation for all groups. Also the increases of CSS score before FESS and 1 year after FESS in the ones with nasal polyp were significantly more than and the ones without nasal polyp.
Conclusion: FESS is a treatment modality which increases the quality life of the patients of chronic sinusitis with or without nasal polyps. But, the increase of the quality of life is more prominent in the ones with nasal polyps.
