EVALUATING THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL APPEARANCE ANXIETY ON PATIENT SATISFACTION IN SEPTORINOPLASTY
1Balıkesir Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Kulak Burun Boğaz ve Baş Boyun Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Balıkesir, Türkiye Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of social appearance anxiety (SAA) on patient satisfaction after septorhinoplasty (SRP).Material and Methods: Fifty-six patients between the ages of 18-60 who underwent open technique SRP due to nasal hump deformity were included in the study. This study was conducted retrospectively in a territory reference center after approval of the local ethics committee.
All patients were assessed for the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) and for the Rhinoplasty outcome evaluation (ROE) questionnaire before surgery. After SRP operation, patients were re-evaluated for the ROE at the sixth month after surgery.
Results: The average SAAS result of the patients was 32.25 ± 3.99 preoperatively. The mean preoperative ROE questionnaire score of the patients was 35.68 ± 3.56 and the mean postoperative ROE questionnaire score was 81.18 ± 4.10, and a statistically significant improvement was observed in the postoperative results (p <0.001).
In order to evaluate whether there is a relationship between the social appearance anxiety of the patients and the postoperative patient satisfaction, a negative statistically significant correlation (relationship) was observed between the SAAS score and the postoperative ROE values.
Conclusion: It was found that individuals with high social appearance anxiety had less postoperative satisfaction. Therefore, we think that it is important to evaluate the social appearance anxiety of the patients before SRP and to inform the patient in this respect.
