ANALYSIS OF PATIENTS UNDERWENT TRACHEOTOMY IN A TERTIARY HEALTH CARE
1Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Kulak Burun Boğaz ve Baş Boyun Cerrahisi AD, Aydın, Türkiye Aim: Surgical tracheotomy, which is performed mainly by Ear Nose Throat clinics, has been applied by different clinics and techniques in recent years in our country. In this study, by analyzing the patients who underwent two main different tracheotomy techniques by different departments in a tertiary health care institution in the last six years, to present the changes in tracheotomy applications to the clinicians in the last years together with the help of current information with indications and complications.Methods: In our study, 178 patients who underwent tracheotomy between January 2013 and December 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Data on age, sex, indications, complications, departments performed tracheotomy and tracheotomy methods were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups as percutaneous dilatator tracheotomy and surgical tracheotomy. Surgical tracheotomy group was classified as emergency and elective tracheotomy group and the data were analyzed.
Results: The data of 178 patients with a mean age of 63.6 ± 17.3 were analyzed. Surgical tracheotomy was performed in 132 patients (38 Female, 94 Male). Percutaneous dilatator tracheotomy (25 Female, 21 Male) was performed in 46 patients. The two main indications for tracheotomy were prolonged intubation and upper airway obstruction. Major complications were minor bleeding, subcutaneous emphysema and wound infection.
Conclusion: In recent years, although there has been an increase in the number of patients undergoing percutaneous dilatator tracheotomy by different clinics, surgical tracheotomy is still a safe and priority gold standard tracheotomy method, especially in the patient groups such as surgical tracheotomy emergency and anatomic pathology.
