Dr. Gaffar ASLAN
Bilim Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Şişli Florence Nightingale Hastanesi, KBB ve BBC, İstanbul, Türkiye Objective: To demonstrate the use of sheep larynx which is anatomically very similar to the human larynx, in the practice and in the education of partial laryngeal surgery for residents.

Material and method: The anatomical dissection and partial laryngeal surgical procedures (1 cordectomies ,1 supracricoid and 1 supraglottic laryngectomies ) were performed with known surgical instruments in five sheep larynges obtained from a butcher and the larynges were reconstructed at the end of surgery. The surgical procedures were photographically documented in every stage.

Results: According to our experience, the surgical manipulation which performed in the ship larynx were similar that of human laryngeal surgery. It was stated a larger arythenoid in sheep larynx in the comparison of human and sheep larynges macroscopically. The epiglottis and valleculas were very similar in human and in the sheep, in form, but the aryepiglottic folds of the sheep were short relatively. The muscles and cartilaginous framework , and the nerves also were similar.

Conclusion: Training on an animal larynx comparable with human larynx by size and shape in the initial years of residency will fasten otolaryngology residents learning process considerably. Keywords : Partial laryngectomy, assistant training, sheep larynx, laryngeal surgery
