CLINICAL AND RADIOLOGIC ASSESSMENT OF NOSE AND PARANASAL SINUSES OF PATIENTS AFTER TRANSSEPTAL TRANSSPHENOİDAL HYPOPHYSECTOMY

Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Kulak-Burun-Boğaz AD, Ankara, Türkiye Transnasal-transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary gland may increase morbidity related to the nose and paranasal sinuses. Nasal complications seen after this intervention necessitates otorhinolaryngologic follow-up postoperatively. Fifteen patients, operated due to hypophyseal tumor were evaluated with a questionnaire, anterior rhinoscopy, diagnostic nasal endoscopy and paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT). The most frequent symptoms were nasal obstruction (60%), nasal dryness (53%), nasal crusting (53%), headache (40%), postnasal drainage (40), rhinorrhea (26%) and epistaxis (20%) respectively. Septal perforation was encountered in 60% of patients and nasal synechiae was noted in 30% of patients. Sphenoid mucocele in one patient and chronic sinusitis in three patients were detected on PNSCT. Keywords : Transseptal transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, nasal, paranasal, complication.
