THE EFFECT OF TONSILLAR ACTINOMYCES COLONIZATION ON TONSILLAR DIAMETER AND SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATORY INDICATORS IN CHILDREN
1Konya Numune Hastanesi, KBB Servisi, Konya, Türkiye Objective: To determine the prevalence of tonsillar actinomycosis in pediatric patients who underwent tonsillectomy and to examine the effects of the presence of actinomyces on tonsil diameter, mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values. Methods: The study was planned as a retrospective study involving pediatric patients who underwent tonsillectomy±adenoidectomy in a single center. Age, gender, tonsil size, MPV, neutrophil, lymphocyte values, presence of actinomyces were recorded from patient files. NLR and PLR were then calculated. Chi-square test, student t test and Mann wihtney u tests were used for statistical analysis.
Results: 602 patients were included in the study. The genders of the patients included in the study were 284 (47.2%) female and 318 (52.8%) male. The mean age was 7.28 ±3.24 years (range: 2-18). The mean right tonsil diameter was found to be 27.48±5.42 (range: 15-45). Actinomyces colonization was detected in 3 (4.2%) patients in the tonsillectomy group, 42 (7.9%) patients in the adenotonsillectomy group, and a total of 45 (7.5%) patients. The mean MPV value was 8.47±1.10 (range: 5.78-12.20); NLR mean 1.41±1.06 (range: 0.26-14.25); The mean PLR was determined as 121.18±43.25 (range: 24.39-333.33).
Conclusions: In our study, it was determined that there is a relationship between the presence of Actinomyces and the diameter of the tonsil. No effect of the presence of Actinomyces on OPH, NLR and PLO values was determined. Actinomyces colonization caused an increase in tonsil diameter and colonization increased with age; it can also be said that colonization does not cause a systemic inflammatory effect.
