1SSK Ankara Eğitim Hastanesi, Patoloji Kliniği, Ankara, Türkiye2Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, KBB ve Baş Boyun Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Sivas, Türkiye AIM:
This study aims to define the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy values of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in diagnosis of palpable head and neck masses.
MATERIAL and METHODS:
FNAC was applied to 369 patient with head and neck masses at Cytology Unit of Pathology Dept. İn the SSK Training & Research Hospital, between years of 2001-2003.
RESULTS:
Among 369 , 83 cases with histopathologic specimens examined in our department were studied. According to the correlation between FNAC and histopathologic examination results, the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy values were defined as 93.4%, 81.8% and 88.8% respectively, without considering the different anotomic localization of the masses.
DISCUSSION:
FNAC is proved to be the first step diagnostic procedure in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant lesions in head- neck masses and thyroid nodules.
