EVALUATION OF SINGLE SIDED DEAFNESS PATIENTS: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

It is a condition where there is little or no hearing in one ear independently from the other ear. In Turkey, this situation is reason for execution of military service and gives a total body obstacle rate of %12 in the applications of the disability committee. Very few of the sudden hearing loss patients present total unilateral hearing loss and this group is the most resistant group to treatment.
Material and Method: This study was conducted with retrospective evaluation of the data of 283 patients.
Results: The largest group in terms of etiology was hearing loss of unknown reason. The most known etiology was feverish infection in childhood and when the history was deepened, mumps was the most common infectious cause. It would be important for mumps to enter the routine vaccination schedule in our country. Other causes include chronic otitis, trauma,cerebello-pontin angle tumors, radionecrosis, demyelinization and cerebrovascular disease.
Conclusion: History and radiological examination plays an important role in elucidating the etiology of the unilateral total hearing loss. Unilateral total hearing loss which may be multidisciplinary approach, is also an important public health problem.
