Methods: In this study, 36 adult male white Spraque Dawley rats of male sex were used for this study each weighing between 250 and 350 grams. Mucosal damage was created by interdental brush (brushing technique). The animals were randomly distributed into two groups as first week group and third week groups. This two groups were subdivided into three subgroups as control, distilled water and allantoin.
Results: According to the histopathologic scoring results, statistically significant difference was observed in terms of edema and congestion (p=0.05 and p=0.005). In the third week among the second three groups statistically significant difference was observed in terms of edema, congestion and fibrosis parameters (p=0.05, p=0.027 and p=0.022).
Conclusion: Our results show that allantoin acts by minimizing edema and congestion in acute stage of wound healing and reduces fibrosis in advanced stages so allantoin can easly used in nasal irrigation solutions. Allantoin can also be a good soaking agent for nasal packing material.
