Therefore, we aimed in the present study, to evaluate the geriatric patient group fallowed up in our vertigo clinic for etiologic distribution and function loss and psychiatric symptoms between these groups.
Material and Methods: 105 patients that are 65 years or older were included in the study. The diagnoses of the patients were classified into 4 different groups as ‘peripheric, central, systemic and psychogenic'. Besides these groups, nonspecific and comorbit groups were also constituted. Each group were compared utilizing symptom scanning test results that is known as Scl-90 R and ‘dizziness handicap inventory (DHI)' as life quality scale.
Results: Mean age of patients was 70,46 (SD: 5.03). Of the patients 72 were female (68%) and 33 were male (32%). 23 (22%) of the patients had more than one diagnosis. When all comorbit patients were excluded from the population, 40 patients (48.8%) were evaluated as peripheric vertigo, 22 patients (26.8%) without diagnose, 11 patient (13.4%) central vertigo, 8 patients (9.8%) systemic vertigo and 1 patient (1.2%) as psychogenic vertigo. When patient group diagnosed with periferic vertigo was compared to other diagnose groups no significant difference was observed for Scl-90 R and DHI (p>0.05). Also, when central vertigo diagnosed group was compared to other diagnose groups, results were not statistically significant (p>0.05). However, in Scl-90 R, several psychiatric parameters were spotted to be high in Cohen's effect values calculation, and a tendency toward this direction has been detected. This situation had been reflected to DHI emotional parameters and supported Scl-90 R findings.
Conclusion: Even though, central diagnose group has less physical handicap compared to other groups, they are considered to demonstrate more psychogenic symptoms and emotional handicapping tendency.
