Objective: Minor salivary gland biopsy is a procedure commonly performed in Otorhinolaryngology clinics for differential diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome. Aim of this study is to evaluate the necessity of minor salivary gland biopsy in the diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome.

Patients and methods: Patients with Sjogren's syndrome prediagnosis underwent serological tests and salivary gland scintigraphy in Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital Department of Rheumatology. Patients who were likely to be Sjogren's syndrome were directed to Otorhinolaryngology Clinic where they underwent minor salivary gland biopsy. Patients' records were evaluated retrospectively.

Findings: One hundred and ninety nine patients who underwent salivary gland scintigraphy were included in the study. Of these patients, 48 (24.1%) patients with salivary gland dysfunction underwent minor salivary gland biopsy and in 17 (8.5%) patients Sjogren's syndrome was diagnosed.

Conclusion: Although it is invasive, minor salivary gland biopsy is one of the valuable diagnostic tool in the differential diagnosis of Sjogren's syndrome. Keywords : Sjogren's syndrome; Minor salivary gland biopsy
