4İstanbul Medipol Üniversitesi, Kulak Burun Boğaz Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul, Türkiye Objective: In this study, patients at risk of bronchial involvement as a result of seasonal allergic rhinitis were evaluated.
Patients and Methods: Patients diagnosed with seasonal allergic rhinitis through a skin prick test, medical history and physical examination were included in the study. Reversibility tests were performed on all patients using 400 micrograms of salbutamol with spirometry.
Findings: Forty-eight patients were diagnosed. The patients' mean FEV1% values were 70.29±13.05 before the test, rising to 77.54±14.01 after the test; while the mean FVC% values were 71.23±14.71% before the test and 77.04±14.67 after the test. Positive reversibility was observed in a total of 19 patients (39.58%); and FVC% and FEV1% values before and after the test were found to be significantly different statistically (p <0.01).
Conclusion: An association between asthma and allergic rhinitis is quite common, with patients suffering from seasonal allergic rhinitis at high risk of contracting asthma. Such patients should be examined for bronchial involvement, and should be informed of the risks. A reversibility test is inexpensive, safe and very easy to apply.
