THE COMPARISON OF SYMPTOMATIC AND ENDOSCOPIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LARYNGOPHARYNGEAL REFLUX AND GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASES

3Adnan Menderes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Biyoistatistik ve Tıbbi Bilişim Anabilim Dalı, Aydın, Türkiye Objective: We studied the correlation between laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) complaints and symptoms and gastroesophageal reflux (GER) complaints, endoscopic esophagitis and Helicobacter pylori (HP) in this study.

Material and Methods: 30 patients who had Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) >13 and Reflux Finding Score (RFS) >7 were included in the study. The complaints of the cases were evaluated by using RSI and frequency scale for the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (FSSG). Larynx and hypopharynx were examined by endoscopy and scored via RFS. Upper gastrointestinal system (GIS) endoscopy done to the cases at the General Surgery Clinic then osephagus was evaluated and the biopsies material were taken from gastric antrum in order to investigate the HP colonization.

Results: There was significantly correlation between RSI and RFS (p=0,002). The correlation between RSI and FSSG was statistically significant (p=0,011). There was no statistically significant correlation between RFS and FSSG (p=0,349). There were 11 (36.7%) cases who had diagnosed as endoscopic esophagitis with upper GIS endoscopy. The correlation between endoscopic esophagitis and RFS was not statistically significant (p=0,740). Helicobacter pylori was detected in 4 cases (16,6%). There was not statistically significant correlation between HP colonization and RSI, RFS (p=0,464,p=0,836).

Conclusion: Our findings suggest that there was not correlation between LPR endoscopic findings and endoscopic esophagitis, HP colonization although patients with LPR and GER have similar symptoms. Keywords : Laryngopharyngeal reflux, gastroesophageal reflux, esophagitis, Helicobacter pylori
