We analysed the causes and incidence of maxillofacial fractures treated in two years (2004-2005) at our clinic. Data regarding, age, gender, cause of fracture, anatomic site, and treatment modalities were reviewed.
121 patients with maxillofacial fractures were treated at our clinic in two years. The age range was 4 to 82 years (mean 30,5). The male to female ratio was 2.8/1. The most common cause was traffic accidents (%42) as in many developing countries. Other common causes included assaults (%27), falls (%23), hitting hard objects (%7), gun shot injury (%1) (Table-1). Mandibular fractures were most common (%43) in our series as seen in other studies and were followed by zygoma (%30) and maxilla fractures (%27) (Table-2). High percentage of patients, 92 patients ( %76 ) were treated by open reduction, and rigid fixation. The other 29 patients (% 24) were treated by closed reduction and conservative tecniques.
Our findings support that the causes and the incidence of maxillofacial fractures vary from one country to another. Traffic accidents were still the most common cause of maxillofacial fractures in our series contrary to developed countries. The most common anatomic site of fractures can vary according to the etiologic factors. In this study we compared our results with those reported in the literature.
