(LANDAU KLEFFNER SYNDROME: AN EPILEPTIC ACQUIRED APHASIA CONFUSED WITH SUBJECTİVE HEARING LOSS)

Gaziantep Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Kulak Burun Boğaz Anabilim Dalı, Gaziantep, Türkiye Landau–Kleffner (LK) syndrome is an acquired epileptic aphasia occurring in normal children who lose previously acquired speech and language abilities. A 7-year-old girl with LK is discussed. The child began having language deterioration at age 5 after a head trauma. Patient was followed by several otolaryngologist as a hearing impaired child. ENT examination of patient was normal. Immitance audiometry, pure tone audiometry, otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and auditory brain stem responses (ABR) were performed. There were no response in pure tone audiometry. Auditory responses were detected in objective hearing tests including immitance audiometry, OAE and ABR. The patient was consulted with a pediatrician. Cranial magnetic resonase imaging(MRI) and electroansephalography (EEG) was performed. Normal results were found in cranial MRI. Spike wave discharges predominating over temporal regions were seen in EEG. This unusual case presented with emphasis on the confused of subjective hearing loss with acquired epileptic aphasia as LK syndrome in children.
