In nasal polyps, chronic inflammation associated epithelial morphological changes (squamous metaplasia, secretory hyperplasia) suggest a dysregulation of epithelial cell proliferation. The aim of this study is to determine the disease extention in nasal polips according to mitotic activity rates and physical examination findings and therefore to perform immunohistochemical and clinic comparison. In this study, any relation between the mitotic activity and grade scores of the nasal polyps was compared in order to find the extention of the disease.
Materials and methods: The modifications of epithelial differentiation and proliferation observed in nasal polyps could be related to local secretion of growth factors. In 19 patients, we evaluated the cell proliferation in nasal polyps using Ki-67 monoclonal antibody immunohistochemically. Before surgery, clinical extent of disease was scored according to the classification of Lund and MacKay. Kruskal Wallis test was used for evaluation of the relationships between parameters.
Conclusion and results: Although there was no statistically significance between Ki-67 and grade scores of the nasal polyps, there was an increasing tendency in Ki-67 scores while grade scores increases.
