EFFECT OF FLUTICASONE PROPIONATE NASAL DROPS ON INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE

Method: Ninety eight eyes of 49 adult patients who were prescribed fluticasone nasal drops for nasal poliposis or allergic rhinitis and did not have any systemic or ocular risk factors that may affect intraocular pressure were included in the study. Intraocular pressure levels of all patients were measured before the treatment. Intraocular pressure measurements were repeated after an average treatment period of 9,53 ± 2,13 weeks. Pretreatment and posttreatment intraocular pressure values were compared statistically.
Results: There was no statistically significant difference between pretreatment and posttreatment intraocular pressure levels (p=0.516 and p=0.940 for the right and left eyes, respectively).
Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that treatment with fluticasone propionate nasal drops does not cause a significant change in the intraocular pressure. However, larger groups of patients are required for further evaluation of the risk for increasing intraocular pressure.
