THE EFFECT OF CHRONIC HYPOXIA ON OUTER HAIR CELL FUNCTIONS IN COCHLEA IN THE CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY PATIENTS

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of chronic hypoxia on hearing functions and external hair cell functions in cochlea in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) , classifiying them according to severity score.

Materials AND Methods: In the present study, 25 patienst with previous diagnosis of COPD referring to ENT outpatient clinic between Januaray 2014 and Decemver 2014 were evaluated. 25 Patients diagmosed with COPD ( 16 M, 9 F mean age 59,1± 9,06 (43-76)) and 17 controls ( 10 M, 7 F -mean age 57,03 ± 7,4 (44-77)) were included in the study. Distorsion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE), Transient Otoacoustic Emission (TEOAE) and high frequency audiometry tests were carried out. After patients were classified according to COPD severity score.

Results: There was no significant difference between COPD patients and control groups in terms of median DPOAE levels at 1500, 2000 ve 3000 Hz' while DPOAE level was significantly lower in control groups at , 4000, 6000 ve 8000 Hz' Although there was no significant correlation between COPD severity score and DPOAE, TEOAE and high frequency audiometry results, it was established that as COPD severity score increased, otoacoustic emission responses decreased and hearing was adversely influenced in high frequency audiometry.

Conclusion: In the present study, it was concluded that in patients with COPD, chronic hypoxia decreased DPOAE responses at high frequencies and that as COPD severity score increased, DPOAE, TEOAE and high frequency audiometry test results were influenced negatively.
