These techniques were divided in two main headings as cartilage shaping and cartilage sparing. The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of two surgical protocols for prominent ears performed by one surgeon, retrospectively.

Method: Between years 2007 and 2014, 30 young adults with bilateral prominent ears were operated with two different protocols. Protocol A (n=14) included extended anterior scoring of the ear cartilage, whereas protocol B (n=16) comprised of techniques combining limited anterior scoring of the ear cartilage, postauricular fascial flap and Mustardé sutures. The efficacy of the both protocols were assessed by qualitative (pre- and postoperative patient pictures and antiheliks formation ) and quantitative ( measurement of the middle helix -mastoid bone distance (HMD), operation time) variants.

Results: All patients in two groups were satisfied with the results. Only minor complications were encountered in three patients operated by protocol B. Pre- and postoperative HMD measurements for both protocols were statistically significant(P<0.001). When comparing postoperative HMD measurements between protocol A and B were not significant.

Conclusion: Both protocols gave satisfactory results ,if performed properly. Considering the rigid structure of the adult ear cartilage , it has been shown that including extended or limited anterior scoring into operative protocols can be effective in prevention of the recurrence of the prominent ear and formation of the antihelix.
