Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi KBB Anabilim Dalı, İzmir Objective: The quantitative evaluation of rhinology publications belonging to the otorhino-laryngology journals of the Science Citation Index (SCI) made from Turkey in the last 12 years and determination of the place of Turkey in the world in this field were aimed.

Material and Methods: After the selection of 29 countries which would be compared with Turkey, SCI journals of the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2012 under the “otorhinolaryngology” heading were determined. After exclusion of specific journals other than rhinology, 11 of eighteen journals belonging to 2000, 10 of fifteen journals belonginging to 2005 and 10 of sixteen journals belonging to 2010 and 2012 were included in the study. The publications of Turkey with the other 29 countries were searched and counted electronically with the use of PubMed search engine in these journals. Then, rhinology related ones were searched manually in these articles and the number of rhinology publications of each country were determined. Besides, the sensitivity of PubMed search engine was evaluated and it was also confirmed that the journals excluded from the study did not have any rhinology publications by the manual search of all the otorhinolaryngology journals of SCI of the years 2000 and 2010.

Results: The number of total publications/rhinology publications made by the 30 countries in the searched journals of the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2012 were respectively as 688/127, 750/148, 713/157 and 778/149. Turkey was at the fourth order in 2000, second in 2005, fifth in 2010 and third in 2012 when the 5 countries that published most were ranked in terms of number of total publications. Turkey was at the third order in 2000 and first in 2005, 2010 and 2012 when the journals were evaluated in terms of number of rhinology publications.

Conclusion: It was found that Turkey was in a very good place especially in terms of numbers of the rhinology and then the total publications within many developed countries within the scope of journals which were studied in 5-year sections from 2000 to 2012. Repetition of similar periodic actual studies will be useful in determining the place of our country in the field of rhinology in the world. Search of publications in terms of evidence-based medicine or citation analysis in these studies will also enable the qualitative evaluation.
