1Hacettepe Üniversitesi, Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi, Odyoloji Bölümü, Ankara, Türkiye Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the chronic diseases that accompany individuals diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and to investigate the effects of these diseases on BPPV recurrence and prognosis.

Materials and Methods: The data of 106 people (mean age 53.29 ± 15.08), 72 female (68%) and 34 male (32%), who were diagnosed with BPPV were analyzed retrospectively.

Results: In this study, 55.7% of individuals were diagnosed with acute BPPV and 44.3% with subclinical BPPV. Chronic disease were obtained of 61.4% individuals with BPPV. Hypertension was found in 34.2% of individuals either alone or in combination with other chronic diseases, and 10.8% of individuals had both hypertension and Type II Diabetes Mellitus. In the study, the recurrence of BPPV was 70.8%. BPPV recurred in 28.3% of individuals with chronic disease and 21.7 % of individuals without chronic disease one year after the first attack.

Conclusion: It is recommended that individuals who are evaluated with the suspicion of BPPV be questioned about accompanying chronic diseases, and that individuals with chronic diseases and vertigo complaints be evaluated in terms of BPPV. It should be kept in mind that patients with hypertension and type II Diabetes Mellitus may be at risk for BPPV. Keywords : Hypertension, diabetes, BPPV, vertigo, chronic disease
