Objective: To investigate the effects of different antibiotherapy regimens on hospitalization duration and abscess recurrences in peritonsillar abscess.

Patients and Methods: The medical records of 64 patients (31 males, 33 females; mean age 29.3 ± 8.3 years) who underwent peritonsillar abscess drainage between November 2006 and November 2012 were analyzed retrospectively regarding antibiotics regimen. The length of hospitalization stay and development of recurrence were comared between for 2 treatment groups that were defined by the antibiotic regimen; Penicillin + Clindamycin, Cefuroxime + Metronidazole.

Results: Mean hospitalization duration was 4 .8 ± 1.5 days in a range of 3 to 11 days. Five (7.8%) patients developed recurrence. Mean hospitalization duration was 8 days in patients who developed recurrence. There was no significant difference between the two groups.

Conclusion: There is no significant differences between the selected antibiotic treatment regimens regarding length of hospitalization stay and recurrence of abscess in the treatment of peritonsiller abscess. Keywords : Peritonsillar abscess, antibiotics, recurrence, length of stay
