Dr. Ceren GÜNEL
Germencik Devlet Hastanesi, Kulak Burun Boğaz Hastalıkları Baş ve Boyun Cerrahisi Kliniği, Aydın, Türkiye Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of radiofrequency (RF) application and intranasal steroid (INS) treatment on nasal congestion and nasal complaints.

Material and Metods: With the complaint of nasal obstruction and inferior turbinate hypertrophy due to nasal congestion by nasal endoscopy detected forty patients were enrolled in the study. The patients were divided into two groups by randomized. Before and after treatment, nasal obstruction and the patient's another complaints were evaluated and scored by a visual analogue scale (VAS). Radiofrequency was applied one group and INS administered once daily to drug group. All patients were asked to return for a control visit and were reevaluated at week eight after treatment.

Results: Fourty patients which are 37 male (74%), 13 female (26%) patients with a mean age of 42.9 were enrolled in the study. VAS scors of nasal obstruction, nasal itch, sneezeing and reduction of concha size were significant before and after treatment at the patients of radiofreguency applied group (p<0,05). Rinore, postnasal drip, smelling, colour of concha and headache were not significantly improvement after treatment (p>0,05). VAS scors of nasal obstruction, postnazal drip, sneeze, smell, reduction of concha size and headache were significant before and after treatment at the patients of drug group (p<0,05). Rinore, nasal itch and colour of concha were not significantly improvement after treatment (p>0,05). Nasal obstruction was significantly improvement at the patients of radiofreguency applied group when the two groups were compared (p<0,001). Rinore, postnasal drip, nasal itch, snezee, smell, headache, reduction of concha and concha's colour were not significant between two groups (p>0,05).

Discussion: At the treatment inferior turbinate hypertrophy due to nasal congestion we recommend RF application which is more effective metod than intranasal streoid. Keywords : Nasal congestion, radiofrequency, intranasal steroid
