POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS OF SUSPENSION LARYNGOSCOPY
Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi KBB Anabilim Dalı, KBB, Konya, Türkiye Aim: To evaluate the incidence and risk factors of complications of after Gallows suspension laryngoscopy (SL) in the patients with larengeal pathology.Material and Methods: Fifty patients undergoing SL were prospectively evaluated. Sex and age distributions of patients, diagnosis, oropharyngeal symptoms of after and before SL, exmanitaion findings, duration of SL, complications, duration and severity of complications were recorded. In addition, thyromental distanse and mouth opening were measured. All patients were performed mallampati classification and laryngoscope grade in order to evaluate orapharynx and larynx.
Results: 5 female (20%) and 45 male (%80) patients with average age of 48.3 years (range, 21-81) were included in the study. Minor postoperative complications occured in 62% of patients. The most frequent complications were sore throat (78%), difficulty swallowing (60%) and toothache (24%). Average duration of complications was 9 days (range, 5-21). Major complications did not development in the patients. Although, there were statistically significant relationship between minor complications and thyromental distanse (p<0.05), there were no statistically significant relationship between minor complications and duration of SL, mouth opening, mallampati classifications and laryngoscope grade (p>0.05).
Conclusion: Minor complications after SL commonly occured, but these were temporary. Therefore, in the preoperative period, if we give information about possible complications after SL to patients, we can increase compliance and pleasure of patients.
