The recurrent laryngeal nevre injury is the most frequent postthyroidectomy complication and during thyroidectomy surgery , routine exposure and preservation of this anatomic structure should become a standart procedure. It is obvious that the incidence of permanent or transient nevre injury will decrease due to improved knowledge of the anatomic details of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The present review study aims to present a clear picture of certain anatomic features of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and its identification methods during thyroidectomy.
