Objective: We present a prospective study that determines the prevalence of the paranasal sinus abnormalities in a population undergoing brain, hypophysial and orbital MRI scans for suspected neurological or orbital diseases.

Materials and Method: The study patients were asked to a list of symptoms related to paranasal sinus abnormalities. The T2 weighted axial MR scans of 107 patients were then reviewed for evidence of paranasal sinus pathology. These results were then correlated with patient's symptoms.

Results: Radiologic abnormalities were most commonly seen in the anterior ethmoid sinuses (12.1 %) followed by the posterior ethmoid (10.3 %), frontal (4.7 %), maxillary (4.7 %) and sphenoid sinuses (3.7 %). Statistical analysis of the clinical data demonstrated no significant relationship between the presence of clinical symptoms of paranasal sinus pathology and abnormalities on MRI scan.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, incidental abnormalities of the paranasal sinuses found on MRI scan do not seem to be related to clinical symptoms. Keywords : Magnetic resonance imaging, paranasal sinus, mucosal pathology
